Spain is an easy destination choice for LGBTQ+ travelers seeking a vibrant culture, beautiful landscapes, and progressive attitude towards the community. While there is a lot of information on well-known destinations of Madrid, Barcelona, and Sitges, in honor of Pride Month, we at Spain Less Traveled also wanted to share some hidden gems that could fit into potential Spain travel itineraries. For those planning a visit to La Piel de Toro (“the Bull Skin”), here are some insights and fun recommendations to elevate your trip.

LGBTQ+ Travel Tips for Navigating Spain

Traveling in Spain as an LGBTQ+ individual is generally a positive experience, especially in larger cities, such as Madrid, and tourist destinations which are known for their inclusive and welcoming attitude. However, as with any travel plan, it’s beneficial to keep some tips in mind.

Legal Protections

Spain was one of the first countries in the world to legalize same sex marriage. It became a constitutionally protected right in 2005.

Furthermore, despite its deep historical Catholic roots, Spain is one of the most progressive countries in the world regarding LGBTQ+ rights, including marriage and adoption rights for same-sex couples. This is reflected in the overall public opinion, with the European Union’s Eurobarometer survey in 2023 finding that 88% of the population believed that same-sex marriage should be allowed across Europe and 89% agreed that “there is nothing wrong in a sexual relationship between two persons of the same sex.” 

Transgender and intersex individuals also received a highly positive public opinion result, with over 90% of respondents stating that they are completely comfortable with working with and interacting with a transgender or intersex person.

However, like everywhere, some of the legal frameworks still need some improvements, for instance a transgender person is still required to receive a medical diagnosis to move forward with transitioning (but the government will recognize it).

But generally Spain is incredibly LGBTI+ friendly.

Accommodation

Generally, any lodging within your budget will suit you just fine, however many hotels and guesthouses across Spain indicate their inclusivity through rainbow stickers or by being members of LGBTQ+ travel associations. While public displays of affection among same-sex couples are common in urban areas, discretion is advised in rural regions. However, this is rapidly changing as acceptance grows throughout the country. As always, keep your wits about you, read the energy of a location, and be safe and respectful.

Hidden Gems: Exploring Spain's Lesser-Known Inclusive Destinations

Sitges, Spain

There are, of course, popular and established LGBTQ+ districts, such as Chueca in Madrid and Eixample in Barcelona, packed with bars, clubs, and cafes that cater to the LGBTQ+ community.

Sitges, one of our favourite day trips from Barcelona, is famous for attracting bearish gay men.

And Torremolinos which is a great day trip from Málaga is one of the oldest gay resort towns.

Here, we want to make some recommendations for hidden gems where the LGBTQ+ presence is woven into the fabric of local life and alternatives to party destinations.

In Galicia, the largest city is Vigo, so of course there is a small scene there, however also consider dropping into the coastal A Coruña, with a laid-back vibe and several inclusive establishments. The town is also charming in its own right with the Tower of Hercules, a Roman lighthouse, and narrow pedestrian streets surrounding the Plaza de Maria Pita.

Spain’s third largest city, Valencia, in general is an easy recommendation. Beyond its famous beaches, Valencia also has a vibrant cultural scene and welcoming atmosphere. LGBTQ+ visitors seeking both sunshine and rich Spanish traditions will be happy to land (and lay out) here.

And even Extremadura, a region often overlooked by the casual tourist, offers breathtaking natural landscapes and historical sites, with a growing LGBTQ+ friendly reputation, particularly in cities like Mérida and Cáceres. Every Spring the city of Badajoz hosts Los Palomos, a large LGBTQ+ film festival which attracts thousands.

In summary, Spain’s commitment to inclusivity combined with its rich cultural tapestry make it an ideal destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. This beautiful country is not just a place to visit, but rather a destination full of communities to engage with and fantastic cities to explore.
